Produced for the use of the Gentlemen Cadets of the Royal Military Academy .

The following two publications were originally bound as 3 works in I with original watercolour paintings in the form of plates illustrated by the Gentleman Cadet as he attended the lectures and did the practical elements of the course. These paintings were bound with the books and course notes to form a unique record of manufacture, testing, usage of Ordnance, Carriages & Ammunition of the Smooth-Bore period.

This publication contains notes on the History of Artillery, Construction of Ordnance, Description of Smooth-Bore Ordnance, Artillery Carriages, Beds, Platforms, Ammunition. Gunnery, application of Gunnery, Organisation, Equipment and application of Artillery. With 261pp, 32 plates which 10 are A3 size fold out.

With the addition of “Rough Drawings on Artillery” watercolour paintings of which there are 13 colour plates which 5 are A3 fold out size. The standard book has on the left hand side of the pages scholarly annotations and calculations on almost every page.

Notes on Gunpowder covers the ingredients, manufacture and proof of gunpowder with copies of lithographs of the principal machines used for the manufacture of gunpowder by the Royal Powder Factories at Waltham Abbey in the 1860’s.

In Conclusion, the above two titles form an in-site into the state of Smooth -Bore Artillery use, testing, manufacturing etc along with a collection of hand written notes made by the student during his lectures and practical work of visiting the works in Woolwich, using the Ordnance in proof firing and attending the latest demonstrations of carriage design including the then new

Moncrieff Gun system.

This follows the same format as the first book with an Introduction, general notes on the Yeomanry of that period, notes on Yeomanry uniforms of this period, then information on all 65 Regiments. With each Regiment’s organization, C.O., strength, notable events, then a detailed description of their Full Dress :Headdress, Tunic or Jacket, leg wear, arms & accoutrements, saddlery & horse furniture starting with the Officers & then the NCO’s & Men.

For the first time two diaries along with a letter to his brother just after Waterloo have been published in one book. The Diary covers service in Copenhagen 1807, Peninsular 1811-13 and a letter after Waterloo 1815. And as an account of the events are justifiably considered the best of the Diaries covering this period by many historians. Each subject is published in a card cover booklet 16cm x 24.5cms. ( their original size) with plans & fold outs carefully folded & placed in the place as the originals were.

FRENCH ARTILLERY of 1824.

This is not one book but three in one covering the development of the subject its manuals, tactics & ordnance upto 1824

 

 

The book is split up as follows: Part 1: Gribeauval and AnXI Systems by the two authors. An overview of nearly 100 years of French manuals, tactics and ordnance. With a number of short biographies of important personalities. Written in 7 chapters & 5 appendices. In total 92pp. Part 2: Ministre de Guerre (1824) a 24 page introduction then 112 pages of this 1824 Artillery manual. Part 3: Levault F.G. Originally 26 plates showing the drill in serving the Artillery at that time and detailed drawings of the Ordnance itself. This presented into 51 plates with English annotations by the authors.

In addition to the above, 6 colour plates of the period are added and 8 new colour plates drawn by Stephen Summerfield on modern computer graphics show 28 Barrels/Artillery pieces & 2 plates showing the servicing of the Guns by modern day re-enactors.

Books on British Army dress & uniform are now widely available however, the Yeomanry Cavalry has very few complete studies of its dress. For the first time ever all Regiments of a given period are included in one publication.

About the book

This publication contains an introduction and general notes on Yeomanry dress, information on all 39 Regiments. With each Regiment’s organization, C.O., strength, notable events, then a detailed description of their Full Dress :Headdress, Tunic or Jacket, leg wear, arms & accoutrements, saddlery & horse furniture starting with the Officers & then the NCO’s & Men.

The Background

This project started over 50 years ago by author Robert J.Smith & the late Leslie Barlow to document & photograph the Uniform, Headdress and developments of the Yeomanry Cavalry. Visiting Museums, Drill Halls, Private collection, tailors shops etc. to research their subject to come to some conclusion to be in a position to publish their research in a book.

Twelve Single Regiments were covered in booklet form by the Ogilby Trust from 1977-1991. But no single volume was published.

With the research & specially illustrated paintings of David J Knight this book is now the result.
