The 1742 Clothing Book

A Representation of the Clothing of His Majesty’s Household and all the Forces upon the Establishments of Great Britian & Ireland.

This very Rare book of approx. 100 full colour plates is hear reproduced for only the second time since 1742 (the first time being 1893 when 25 copies were produced).

This edition has each plates reproduced in full colour 9x6” size mounted onto a art card page of 160gms. Each page is had sewn with a title & contents page and bound with hard covers, covered with scarlet buckram cloth and re-enforced black leather corners. The spine & front cover with gold leaf lettering & design. The book has its own slip case with the scarlet buckram covering.

Uniforms of the Officers of the British Army c1819,

Based on a chart by C.Marcuard

This very special publication uses the Chart illustrated by C.Marcuard (late Q.M.G. Dept) to illustrate all the Regiments of the Army( 126) with 4 of Staff, 8 of R.A., R.M., Dept’s, and 8 others.

Using details of existing items of uniform & headdress, information published and new research to add to the details already available this publication is a unique example of a totally new subject never covered before using new technology to create a lavishly illustrated, well produced publication.

With 146 new illustrations painted specially by the miniaturist artist Terrence Pratt using a technique to shown the maximum amount of detail. Each of the 146 FULL COLOUR illustrations are A5 size making 73 A4 colour plates plus details of each Regiments service, Battle Honours with photographs of examples of some of the uniforms, lace, headdress in the appendix. British Uniform Patten Book 1886 or Jones’s Taylors Patten Book 1886

With the introduction of each new edition of the various “Dress Regulations” the Master Taylors and various contractors has to have an illustrated account of how they were going to supply the new patten of uniforms to the Officers of the Regiments & Government Dept’s. who would then place orders with these manufactures. Each Regimental Taylor had to submit a patten book of detailed designs with all dimensions & cutting details etc. before being accepted to his position within the Regiment.

This edition covers the new regulations for the “Territorial” Regiments with their title & dress which was to last as the final pattens for full dress for a further 80 years. The Cutter’s Practical Guide to British Military & Naval Uniforms 1881-1914.

With each corp’s organization, C.O., strength, notable events, then a detailed description of their Full Dress : Headdress ( Tarleton helmet or Shako), Jacket, leg wear, arms & accoutrements, saddlery & horse furniture starting with the Officers & then the NCO’s & Men.

Due to this very early period being covered and the very limited material which exists, often only a portrait or single item of kit, ,a tailors diagram or a written description, the authors have made an attempt to record what is known and create a series of snapshots of what the various corps were actually wearing.

Shoulder Belt Plates & Buttons. By Major H.G.Parkyn

For over 30 years this was the only book on this subject. It places on record some of the many changes in the design of the Shoulder-Belt Plate & Buttons worn by the Regular Army. It gives details of change in titles, and dates of battle honours awarded during the period when the SBP’s were worn. An encylocpedia of Regiments of Horse & Foot (in their post 1881 order) going by their original numbering system. The design of buttons are covered up to 1911 with all their various changes. An average entry for one Regiment can show up to 10 different examples. The book has 550 line drawings on 342pp A5 size. Uniform Regulations for Officers, Petty Officers, and Seaman of the Fleet 1879.

Unlike its Army counterpart this set of Dress Regulations take the reader through the dress & equipment used by each rank from Admiral of the Fleet to Band Boy. It has 42 FULL COLOUR plates showing these uniforms, equipment, rank badges, medal ribbons.

Dress Regulations of the British Army .

The OHMS publications were issued as and when changes appeared to the fashion & style of the Officers Dress. During the period of this collection listed (1822-1900) a great change appeared in way the Army was dressed & equipped, these regulations reflect this. Never during the history of the British Army has there been an illustrated representation of equipment used by all branches of the services and listing & illustrating examples of their dress, clothing, necessaries ,appointments,rank details,ammunition and all equipment used for all ranks. The “all ranks” is possibly the most important point as Officers has their written Dress Regulations of various dates , this is a collection of publications gives over a short period of the 1860’s a listing & description of the items which would be found being used by the Army of the day, from the way they looked, what tools they used, instruments used in hospitals etc. A true time capsual of documentation of the mid Victorian period. Each plate of illustrations has them either drawn to scale (with the scale on it) or each item has its own dimensions. With over 90% of items described not of “Officer” usage, this provides a unique source of detail for the collector, researcher, modeller, re-enactor etc to see what the post Crimean soldier used wore in his Army life. Types of the Indian Army by Frederick Bremner

Frederick Bremner travelled around India & the NWF in the late 1890’s photographing Indian and British Army soldiers on their normal service, as an observer of the idiosyncrasies of the dress always found in any Regiment, Bremner was and remains the foremost in his field taking detailed group photographs specially posed to show the orders of dress. This magnificent album of whole plate photographs originally taken by Bremner’s Stuido of Quetta in 1897. Is reproduced using 9”x6” size B & W photographs mounted on card pages and hand bound into an A4 Landscape hand cover book, bound with khaki coloured buckram cloth and gold leaf lettering. £ 49.00 1.01 Kg

 

Uniforms of the Indian Army by R.Simkin

Richard Simkin produced a series if 180 colour plates for the Army & Navy Gazette between 1888-1902, these 12 plates are taken from this series. Each A4 size plates has a collection of mounted & foot soldiers with 72 different uniforms illustrated. Each hage is hand mounted and bound into an A4 landscape size book. This is the first time this collection has been produced before in its original size & in book form. Cost £26. 480gms

 

The Standards and Colours of the Army by Samuel Milne Milne

A classic book on the subject when published in 1893 was limited to only 200 numbered copies. It had xxiii, 267pp, 29 plates of which 16 are full colour, 57 illustrations. This edition is produced the slightly larger size of A4, hand bound with buckram cloth, hard covers, gold leaf lettering on spine, colour design on cover in gold leaf, is of limited edition of only 50 numbered copies only.
