Treatise of Military Carriages and other Manufactures of the Royal Carriage Department ( 1874-1911)

Each edition of this highly detailed & technical publication, lists all types and variations of Carriage with its load (gun barrel in situ) for artillery carriages, Naval & Garrison ordnance and various views and detailed diagrams for horse drawn carriages. Every such item in service is included with all new items added as the various editions were issued. As the new changes appeared, eventually the older Carriages (mainly for ordnance) were excluded. The great value of such a publication is that all the drawings & plans were to scale with each scale on each drawing.

This is ideal for any modeller who would want to make scale model or anyone wanting to conserve or make parts for an example of such a Carriage. As the editions were enlarged due to the large coverage of new Carriages being developed, it was necessary to move from the B & W line drawings to multi-coloured printed engravings with all the enhanced features this offered in the more complex views of Carriages where a range of material & systems were used and required. This started to be used in the 6 th Edition (1902) when a separate vol. was needed for Plates and continued with the 7 th edition (1911) when the full colour plates accounted for 99% of the engravings in that Vol .(258).

All editions are rare and very rarely appear on the second hand book market. All examples listed are reproduced 25% larger than the original size, are in good clean condition with all marks & foxing removed and produced in the modern size of A4. Each edition is hand bound in dark blue buckram cloth with gold leaf lettering on the spine & royal cost of arms on the cover. All to make a matching set.

Aide- Memoire to THE MILITARY SCIENCES 1850-1853.

framed from contributions of Officers of the different services and edited by

A Committee of the Corps of Engineers.

The object of this work was to supply as far as practicable, the many and common wants of Officers in the Field, in the Colonies, and remote Stations where books of reference are seldom to be found, useful to the Engineer, Artillery and Line Officers , in their military capacity as well as to the Governors and Commandants of Posts in their civil capacity and instructive to all the junior branches of the Service in their leisure hours.

The “Aide- Memoire ” was not intended to be a Military Dictionary or Encyclopaedia or even a manual but as a reminder and reference for which short essays and tables are given to the Military and Collateral Sciences previously studied. The alphabetical arrangement has been followed for convenience. It is found to embrace most contingencies required not of an elementary nature in:

Sapping and Mining

Engineering Duties in the Field, Attack & Defence, Garrison

Pontooning and Passages of Rivers

Principles of the Duties of the Cavalry ,Artillery,Infantry & Staff Officers.

Including the tactics of the three Arms each of which before needed a separate reference. Considering the multifarious avocations common to every part of the British Army, and more especially those of the Engineer Corps, the labour has been long taking a period of seven years to complete and due to a revision of several subjects by the contributors in Vol. I a Second Editions has been necessary.

Each Volume has numerous plates and wood-cuts each of which can have up to 20 or more illustrations/drawings on the subject matter. Many of which are true works of art from the draughtsman’s hands. The three Volume’s divided as follows:

Vol. I , 2 nd Edition,1853, Abattis - Ford. 545pp 141 plates.

With each volume having upward of 70 different subject titles it is not possible to start to list them all so the contents pages are available on request. (Example of this book shown in photograph section)
